"The Change - From virtual to real": it is not just about informing, on the contrary, the company, which is possible here and now, is about acting by proposing projects, initiatives, courses, "relocations": everything that presupposes a change. Committed because this word "change”Don't just stay on paper, or on screen, the director is in the front rowMassimo Nardi is Paolo Ermani, editor of the newspaper and director of PAEA.
1) When were you born and with which mission?
As a Paea association we were born in 1999 with the aim of operating a overall change in society, personal and collective, referring to Gandhi: “Be the change you want to see in the world ". The strong economic crisis is highlighting the failure of the current economic system, based on consumerism and commodification, a change it becomes necessary; so here in 2010 we decided to create the newspaper with the purpose of informing readers.
2) Which areas do you deal with and which arouse the most interest?
Ecology, degrowth, permaculture, sectorial journalistic inquiries and all this highlights the change. We also and above all give a voice to those who a change he has already been doing it for some time, telling stories of real life. Lately a lot of interest has been raised by the theme of “detachment” that we propose taking a cue from the book Detachment Office and also here of change it deals with. The newspaper is then the spokesperson for the Paea Association.
3) Paea Association: what is it about?
Paea is an association that deals with the environment, renewable energy, energy and water saving, green building, change of lifestyles, degrowth. It wants to show that it is possible to live and work differently in non-destructive areas for the environment and that they also have a high social value.
4) You have celebrated 15 years of Paea: there has been a change in this period of time?
From 1999 to today yes, a change there was: there is more attention to environmental issues and the issues we were dealing with at the time are no longer seen as strange and unattainable. Environmental devastation, resource depletion, pollution, the change of the climate… problems are increasing and we are trying to find real solutions. One of the many that we offer with Paea is precisely the Deployment Office, to help people with a series of meetings throughout Italy, to make a real change, giving up an overworked job, a wrong lifestyle, stress, anxiety, consumerism.
5) Do you carry out initiatives in schools related to change? Which and with what answers?
Environmental education and training has always been a fundamental activity. We have involved thousands of students, both directly called by schools and through our traveling exhibitions, making them reflect on change. We have carried out many training courses including "Energy - Environment - Work", with center for energy and the environment in Springe in Germany where there is also the possibility of a summer stay, and "Changing life and work, instructions for use", at Renewable Energy Park (Terni) where the Energy Camp and the Journalism Course are also held.
6) As a pro-change association, what relationship do you have with the public administration?
We have often worked with municipalities and certainly more and better could be done on change. There is still the belief, wrong but difficult to unhinge, that investing in the environment is a cost. Instead just triggering a change exceptional results are obtained on energy saving also due to the poor conditions of public buildings. Public administrations too often waste energy and at the same time complain that they have no money. The question is not whether the change is possible but if you want to implement it.
7) And with private individuals?
The change here it would be necessary that, instead of buying by obeying the advertisement, they started to make better use of their money. They could support investments and employment in the environmental field, in organic farming, in eco-tourism, in culture. With the huge amount of money squandered we would give all the unemployed to work and we would need more manpower for all there would be to do. The change it is possible here and now, it would be enough to really want to do it.
