Seed tape do it yourself: an alternative to the classic sowing involves the use of seeds fixed on belts of biodegradable material that decomposes, in a very short time, in contact with the ground. This system saves the number of seeds used and reduces the subsequent thinning operations.
Seed tape do it yourself
Before proceeding to explain how to buildseed belt, we give you information on the sowing distance. The appropriate sowing distance is estimated considering the final destination of the product, the root growth and the growth of the aerial part of the plant. The distance can vary a lot even when it comes to the same vegetable, for example, for the large bulb onion the distance amounts to 12-15 cm, while for the small bulb onions 8-10 is enough, it still drops to 2- 3 cm if we consider the onions used for the preparation of pickles.
On the market, the most common vegetables found with ribbon seeds are cauliflower, cabbage, cap, radicchio, endive, head lettuce, parsley, radish, celery, spinach .... and all the other vegetables that have a more or less small seed.
Whoever wishesself-producedgodsseed belthas only a few to investsmall change. What you need to prepareDIY ribbon seed?
- Toilet paper
It is recommended to use paper that decomposes as quickly as possible, for this purpose you can use white double-ply toilet paper, thinner and cheaper.
- Organic glue
If you cannot find proper organic glue, you can use cellulose glue, such as that used by building painters. In the case of cellulosic glue, this must be very diluted, a couple of drops in a glass of water are enough.
You will need it to spread the glue
To cut toilet paper
From toilet paper, cut out strips 2.5 - 3 cm wide. Inside these strips, place the seeds at the desired distance. Fix the seeds with very diluted cellulose glue. There is no need to close the edges of the strips as the seeds should adhere perfectly to the paper with the glue.
Once the tapes have been packaged, they must be stored in a dark and dry environment until planting which must take place within a few days.
For theself-produced belt seeds it is advisable to use high quality seeds: if the seeds are not highly germinable, fewer seedlings may develop than expected. It is not certain that every seed is able to give life to a seedling, so it is better to place some emergency seeds to germinate in a seedbed tray.
Belt seeds on the market
As it is clear, self-producing belt seeds with do-it-yourself is simple, however, those who do not have much time to invest for this procedure can simplify sowing by purchasing seeds on a belt ready for use. Among the various market proposals we point out:
1) Carrot - 5 meters of sowing tape
2) Lettuce canasta - 5 meters of sowing tape
3) Radish - 5 mt tape for sowing
