June is a very profitable month of the year for our garden; full of rewards. Those who have sown early will already be able to harvest basil, chard, carrots, lettuce, peas, parsley, celery and zucchini.
To ensure productivity to your plants it is good to perform some small tricks. In this regard we will illustrate the work to be done in June in your own garden.
June work in the garden, what to do
- Beans, potatoes, tomatoes, aubergines, peppers and peas must be tucked up, therefore, bring some earth back to the base of the plants, to prevent the roots from being discovered. A small hoe is enough to create a small pile of earth at the base of the stem, but be careful not to touch the roots.
- Vegetables that feel the lack of water most or the competition of weeds should be mulched. Mulching is a practice that consists in protecting the soil near the plants to avoid moisture loss and the growth of weeds. The best mulches are made with materials of natural origin (straw, wood chips, leaves). Often black plastic sheets are also used, or better still cellulose and starch based, more breathable and biodegradable. Holes will be made in the sheets in which to plant the plants. In addition to saving watering, they will ensure the isolation of the vegetable from the ground which will remain healthier and cleaner. - The stakes for climbing beans and green beans must be set up
- The curly endive tufts must be tied to carry out the bleaching. Generally this operation is done on the absolutely dry plant 15-20 days before harvesting. For further information, please refer to the article "Bleaching, how and when to do it"
June work in the garden, the sowings
As for sowing outdoors, by mid-June it will be possible to proceed with thistle, bean and climbing green beans. At the end of the month it will be possible to sow early fennel. If, on the other hand, we still want to transplant something, it is still time for the late tomato, cabbage and more lettuce and escarole.
June work in the garden, aromatic plants
June is the month in which we can harvest different herbs: this is the case of mint, oregano, thyme, lemon balm, marjoram. Then arrange to dry the herbs in a dry and ventilated place, in order to ensure a good supply of precious aromas and flavors throughout the winter. Finally, if you want to make cuttings of sage and rosemary this is the right time.
